Doyle Shaw Obituary

Dshaw_20150327Mar. 21, 1933 – Mar. 26, 2015 Elmer “Doyle” Shaw passed away peacefully at his home in Hoover, AL on Thursday March 26th, 2015 at the age of 82. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Sara Jean Shaw; his two sons, Steven Doyle Shaw (Jamelle) and Stanley Gene Shaw (Susan); and his Grandson, Zachary Stanton Shaw. He was born in Dunnavant, AL on March 21, 1933, the youngest and last living survivor of 6 brothers and sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil Hobart Shaw, Sr. and Kittie McLane Shaw. He attended Jones Valley High School in Birmingham, was a Veteran of the Air Force and graduated from the University of Alabama in 1959 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He moved back to Birmingham starting his career with Southern Services and ultimately retiring from the Southern Company as a Principal Engineer with over 30 years of service with the company. Doyle was an avid golfer, a member of Hoover Country Club and former President of Chace Lake Country Club. He has the distinction of shooting his age or better in every year since he was 70 years old. He was an ardent Bridge player, won many tournaments and rose to the level of “Life Master”. He and his wife Jean loved to travel and were active members of Bluff Park Methodist Church. In addition to engineering, golf and bridge, Doyle was probably best known by many as “Coach Shaw” and was a very successful Coach in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s at Shades Mountain and Hoover. He had significant impact and was a strong influence on many young men’s lives. He continued that influence with his relationship and encouragement of his Grandson, Zac, in his later years. He also served two separate terms as President of the W. A. Berry High School Athletic Association. Visitation will be 5pm – 7pm on Sunday, March 29th at Southern Heritage Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at Bluff Park United Methodist Church on Monday, March 30th at 1pm led by Senior Pastor Mike Holly and Retired Senior Pastor Reid Crotty. A graveside service and interment will follow at Union UMC, The Church at Chelsea Park. Toby Leamon retired from the Southern Company Services hydro projects design group. He has been fighting cancer for almost two years including surgery and chemo. He is now at home with around the clock nursing and hospice care. Your cards and letters can be address to:

Wendell Kirk Obituary

Feb. 8 1935 – Feb.20 2015 Wendell was born in Konawa, Oklahoma of parents Reuel Gray Kirk and Madge Jamison Kirk. He grew up in Shawnee, Oklahoma, where he graduated from Shawnee High School. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma, and became a Captain in the Marine Corps. He was employed at Hercules Inc.; Alabama Power Company; and retired from Southern Nuclear Operating Company, as Manager of Safety and Health. He is survived by wife, Phyllis; son, Kevin Kirk and wife, Lisa, and grandchildren, Emily, Zackery and Caitlyn of Pell City and granddaughter Cameron Kirk Nichols of Kimberly ; daughter, Kristen Kirk, DVM and husband, Jason Brown, of Colorado Springs, Colorado. His extended family resides in North Carolina, South Carolina, Kansas,Kentucky, Alabama, and California. His memorial service will be on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at 11:30 am at Shades Valley Presbyterian Church, 2305 Montevallo Road, Mountain Brook, AL. Visitation with family will be at 10:30. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Shades Valley Presbyterian Church or Grace Christian Church, 869 Highway 52, Helena, AL. 35080.
