Gray and Dianne Murray will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on November 24th.  Congratulations!

J. D. and Veva Naramore  celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary last Sunday, November 17. That date was exactly one year after he was hired at SCS on November 17, 1956.  J. D. tells us that at that time the company had a very strict policy of “no vacation until completing your first year.”  So in order for them to go on a honeymoon, they set that date as their wedding date.  Several years later an exception was made; early vacation could be used for weddings.  November 17 is a special date in their lives!

Nov. 2013 Luncheon

Our annual November Luncheon was held Wednesday November 20, 2013 at the Vestavia Hills Country Club. Entertainment was provided by the “Wilson Hill Bluegrass Band”. They have been playing together for around 20 years and most hail from the Montevallo, Al area. In fact this area was called the town of Wilson Hill before the name was changed to Montevallo around 1825.  The group consists of Doug Morris, Barney Perkins, Lee Wallace, Gary Jones and Ron Morko.  Barney (88 years old) is a retired fireman who is an excellent cook and also can “pick and grin” with the best.  He is proud of his guitars that were hand-picked at the factory.  Ron, the fiddle player, has a “stable” of old cars including a 1938 Rolls Royce, a 1949 Bentley and multiple Packard cars. Lee is 82 years old and plays base and guitar for the group.  Gary is retired from the telephone company and plays banjo.

We had a good turn out for the luncheon. Here are some pictures…

Member Care

Our sympathy is extended to SCS/SNC retiree, Peggy Burdeshaw, in the death of her mother, Dorothy Jones. Mrs. Jones passed away the morning of 11/20/2013. She was laid to rest Thursday, November 21, 2013 in Phenix City, AL at Lakeview Memorial Gardens.

Carter Leonard’s wife, Juanita, recently had hip replacement surgery, and is now at home recuperating.

I spoke with Jean Shaw, wife of retiree Doyle Shaw this morning. Doyle has been diagnosed with lung cancer. Jean said that after some tests, the doctors determined he would not take chemo, but would take a pill instead. She said he is doing very well.

Rachel and Howard Hubbard are also dealing with health problems. Howard is using a walker and is on oxygen.

The Jim Rooker family is suffering with bronchitis.

I would also appreciate hearing about anniversaries, birthdays, etc.
