A celebration of life service will be held in the sanctuary at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church in Homewood, Alabama on Tuesday, January 7th at 12:00 pm. A visitation will be held prior beginning at 11:00 am.

Jerry was born to Ethel Hay and Jarrett Sappington in Trenton, Tennessee on December 31, 1932. Jerry’s family moved throughout the Southeastern United States during his youth, spending time in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana. He graduated from high school in Tupelo, Mississippi, and immediately joined the U.S. Air Force. A proud veteran, he specialized in radio repair until he was honorably discharged in 1955 to then enroll at Mississippi State University, where he later graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He spent his entire career as an Electrical Engineer with Southern Company Services receiving many advancements and promotions during his tenure there.

Jerry was married to the love of his life, Mary Janelle (Nelle) Wright, with whom he shared over 50 years of happiness and joy until her death in 2006.

Jerry’s faith was an integral part of who he was. For over 60 years, he was an active member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church where he was a deacon, taught Sunday School and participated in construction mission trips to build churches throughout the United States.

Jerry’s favorite hobby was woodworking. He grew up learning from his carpenter father and enjoyed building furniture, additions to the family home, and generously sharing his time and talent to help friends and family with similar projects.

An honorable, generous, kind, hard-working, and faithful man, Jerry lived a full, rewarding life and had a positive, lasting impact on everyone whose life he touched.

Jerry was preceded in death by his beloved wife Nelle, his parents Ethel Hay and Jarrett Sappington, his daughter Jan Sappington Jones (William), and his brother Charles Sappington.

He is also survived by his brother Bobby Sappington of Metairie, Louisiana.

Jerry’s family would like to extend a special thank-you to the caring staff at Longleaf Liberty Park in Vestavia Hills, Alabama.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in his memory to Dawson Baptist Church, Homewood, Alabama is gratefully appreciated.
