Bill Thurman, long time member of Fuel Department at SCS has passed away.

Bill’s wife Mary Alice Thurman let us know that Bill passed away this week. There will be a visitation at Vestavia Methodist Chapel at 10:00, followed by a service at 11:00 on April 30.

Don Smaha passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2026 at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife, Sondra after 61 years of marriage. He is also survived by his son John and his wife Robyn, his grandson Wes and his wife Ashley, his brother Joe and his wife Shirley, his sister Carol Smaha Cheshire and her husband Monty, and several nieces and nephews.

Don obtained his Electrical Engineering degree from Auburn University and his Masters degree from UAB. He served in the US Navy Seabees and 2 tours in South Vietnam. He worked at SCS for 30 years in the System Planning Department and in the Technical Service Department.

Don was a devoted husband and father and will be missed. He was buried Tuesday, April 13, 2026 at Elmwood Cemetery.

It’s that time of year where we need all members to update their membership information and pay their yearly dues. You will soon or should have already received your 2026 membership renewal form in the mail.  Please fill in that form and mail it to Dave Lisenby at the address shown – or if you prefer, you can make your payment on-line by clicking the Payments link here or above in the menu.

If you pay on-line, please continue to fill in the form, check the “Paid On-line” box and send the form to Dave Lisenby so that we have all of your contact information.

Membership renewals and payments are due by March 27, 2026.

Note that there are several categories of membership as discussed on the form and repeated below. Please pay the amount appropriate for your level of membership. Most members should pay the regular member $20.00 rate (inside the Birmingham area):

2026 SCS/SNC Retirees Membership Qualifications & Dues:
(Note: Employees retiring after September 2025, the 2026 dues are NOT required.)

1. Regular Members –
   • Employees retired with pension or long-term disability – Dues $20.00
   • Employees retired with pension or long-term disability living outside (more than 50-mile radius) of the Birmingham area. – Dues $10.00
2. Associate Members:
   • Spouse of a dues paying Regular Member No dues required
   • Surviving spouse of a deceased Regular Member – Dues $10.00
3. Honorary Members: Employees retired with a pension or long-term disability who are physically unable to participate. – No dues required
