Samuel Robert Hart Jr. (Bob) age 90 of Vestavia Hills Alabama passed away on July 12, 2017. Bob was a native of Birmingham graduating from Ensley High School in 1944 and he served in the Army during WWII. Bob graduated from the University of Alabama in 1949 with a degree in Electrical Engineering and began a 38 year career with the Southern Company until he retired in 1986. He held positions such as Assistant to the President of Alabama Power and retired as Vice President of Research and Environmental Affairs for Southern Company Services. He was married for 65 years to the former Corinne Donnelly Hart who preceded him in death in 2014. Bob is survived by a son Gary (Marcia) and a daughter Lisa Reynolds (Preston) as well as three granddaughters Leigh Hart Lehman (Gordon), Ashley Reynolds Nail (Cliff) and Lesley Reynolds and a great granddaughter Carson Nail.
Throughout his life Bob was a faithful Alumnus of the University of Alabama. He helped start the Capstone Engineering Society at the University and was its first Chairman. Bob was recognized as an Outstanding Alumni by the UA College of Engineering in 1979 and as a Distinguished Engineering Fellow in 1981. He was a huge fan of Alabama football. Bob was very involved in the community where he was President of the Birmingham Jaycees in 1959 and received the Vulcan Medal for his work with the Boy Scouts in 1966. Bob was a long time substitute Adult Sunday School teacher at Shades Mountain Baptist Church and a member of the Vestavia Historical Society.
The family will receive visitors on Sunday July 16, 2017 at Ridout’s Elmwood Chapel from 1:00 p.m. till 2:00 p.m. followed by a Chapel Service at 2:00 p.m. Mr. Hart established an endowed scholarship at the Big Oak Ranch and requests that in lieu of flowers any donations be made to the Big Oak Ranch, PO Box 507 Springville Alabama 35146 and that your donation be added to the Hart Family Scholarship
