Warren Glover

John Warren Glover (Warren), 85, passed away at 7:10am on November 29, 2020 in Birmingham, Alabama. Warren was born on June 3, 1935, the only child of a carpenter and a long-time registrar of West End High School. He spent his childhood honing the gifts of service and precision received from his parents, while also developing an appreciation for adventure and laughter. He graduated from West End High School in 1953, where he met his future bride, Mary Ann Lilly. At West End, he developed innumerable life-long friendships through his participation in clubs, civic organizations and sports, receiving numerous awards, including Best Dancer. Warren and Mary Ann were wed in 1956 and began a union which created and nurtured three children and 5 grandchildren.

Warren graduated from Auburn University with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1957 and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the US Army, serving in the Signal Corps stationed in Fort Monmouth, NJ and Fort Gordon, GA. Following discharge, Warren began a 35-year career designing and building power plants for the Southern Company, where he was known not only for his engineering and leadership skills but also for his gregarious and caring nature.

Warren and Mary Ann raised their three daughters in Birmingham, where he enjoyed serving as a deacon at Raleigh Avenue Baptist Church and spending his vacations chaperoning the youth choir mission trips. Warren could be found on many fall weekends tailgating at Auburn football games with family and great friends. He had a lifelong enjoyment for golf and cherished his Tuesday morning tee time with friends in retirement, only hanging up the clubs last year. Warren was also a dedicated runner, completing three marathons and developing deep and lasting friendships along the way.

Warren retired in 1994, which gave him and Mary Ann time to travel and allowed him to improve his golf game and enjoy running. He also embarked on his most cherished career as Granddad, Dad and Father-in-Law – a/k/a Pop. He exemplified fun at the Lake House and Auburn football games, hard work with thousands of hours spent shoulder-to-shoulder on projects, dedication through countless miles driven to be present when and where needed, and a heart of service in everything he did.

Warren was preceded in death by his father, Clinton Jasper Glover, and his mother Alta Wood Glover.

Warren is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Ann Lilly Glover; his children Debbie and husband Ben Washburn, Christie and husband Mike Tucker, Kathy and husband Tomoka Gaddis; his grandchildren: Perry and wife Amanda Washburn, Andrew Washburn, Madison and husband Jake Miller, Renae Washburn, Elijah Gaddis.

Warren was a man of deep faith which created a foundation of immeasurable strength for his family and friends. Generations will reap what he has sown.
