SCS President Stan Connally to speak at our Jan. 21, 2025 Meeting

We hope everyone is planning to attend our January retiree meeting on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the Colonnade Energy Center auditorium. We are excited to have Stan Connally, executive vice president of operations at Southern Company – and – chairman, president and chief executive officer of Southern Company Services (SCS) as our speaker. Stan is our SCS Executive sponsor for our retirement group. He will be sharing with us and answering questions. Again, we hope everyone will be able to attend and you can bring a guest with you.

Jerry Sappington

Jerry Monroe Sappington passed away peacefully surrounded by family on December 27, 2024.

A celebration of life service will be held in the sanctuary at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church in Homewood, Alabama on Tuesday, January 7th at 12:00 pm. A visitation will be held prior beginning at 11:00 am.

Jerry was born to Ethel Hay and Jarrett Sappington in Trenton, Tennessee on December 31, 1932. Jerry’s family moved throughout the Southeastern United States during his youth, spending time in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana. He graduated from high school in Tupelo, Mississippi, and immediately joined the U.S. Air Force. A proud veteran, he specialized in radio repair until he was honorably discharged in 1955 to then enroll at Mississippi State University, where he later graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He spent his entire career as an Electrical Engineer with Southern Company Services receiving many advancements and promotions during his tenure there.

Jerry was married to the love of his life, Mary Janelle (Nelle) Wright, with whom he shared over 50 years of happiness and joy until her death in 2006.

Jerry’s faith was an integral part of who he was. For over 60 years, he was an active member of Dawson Memorial Baptist Church where he was a deacon, taught Sunday School and participated in construction mission trips to build churches throughout the United States.

Jerry’s favorite hobby was woodworking. He grew up learning from his carpenter father and enjoyed building furniture, additions to the family home, and generously sharing his time and talent to help friends and family with similar projects.

An honorable, generous, kind, hard-working, and faithful man, Jerry lived a full, rewarding life and had a positive, lasting impact on everyone whose life he touched.

Jerry was preceded in death by his beloved wife Nelle, his parents Ethel Hay and Jarrett Sappington, his daughter Jan Sappington Jones (William), and his brother Charles Sappington.

He is survived by his son Doug Sappington; grandchildren Cody Wright, James Sappington (Helen), Maggie Sappington, Noah Jones and Bailey Jones; and great-grandchildren Abby, Ellie, and Maddie Sappington and Odin Wright, all of Birmingham. He is also survived by his brother Bobby Sappington of Metairie, Louisiana.

Jerry’s family would like to extend a special thank-you to the caring staff at Longleaf Liberty Park in Vestavia Hills, Alabama.

In lieu of flowers, a donation in his memory to Dawson Baptist Church, Homewood, Alabama is gratefully appreciated.

Wayne Veitch

Dennis “Wayne” Veitch passed away peacefully at his home on December 3, 2024 in Pleasant Grove, AL after battling cancer. Wayne was the youngest child of four and born on November 25, 1945 to Leon and Lois Veitch in Birmingham, AL. He was 79 years old when he passed.

Wayne was a graduate of Fairfield High School in 1964. He was a high school football player and wrestler. Wayne was a good friend to many people.

After high school, Wayne attended the University of Alabama in 1965 where he played football. Later in 1967, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps and served for seven years and was honorably discharged in 1974. Wayne graduated from the University of Alabama in Birmingham in 1988 majoring in Business. He worked at Southern Company Services for 24 years. For the past thirty years, Wayne has helped run the his family business, Veitch Machine Company.

Wayne married his wife, Debbie on July 17, 1971 and they were together for 52 years. They liked traveling for fun. In Wayne’s younger years he enjoyed being a softball coach, working on his corvette, and being a member of the Stogie group.

Wayne loved watching sports. He was a huge Alabama Crimson Tide fan. He also never missed watching the Atlanta Braves play baseball and enjoyed watching all sports including nascar, basketball and even golf. Wayne was an avid coin collector. He has been collecting coins since he was a young boy. He loved the Sunnyside family beach house and working in his nature area. He recently found a new hobby. Wayne was the proud owner of a 1965 GTO. This car helped him stay busy.

Wayne is survived by his two daughters Jennifer Clark (Bill) of Morris, AL and Julie Scott (Chad) of Tunica, MS. Wayne is also survived by his brother George Veitch. His grandchildren are as follows: Michael, Kenna, Thomasina, James, Kimberly, Carley, Lexi, Collin and Walker. His great grandchildren are Kensley, Jayce, Alysa, Gavin, Charlie, Adley, Aron, and Bryce. He also leaves two four legged friends – Mandy and Kate.

Wayne is predeceased in the recent death of his wife Debbie Veitch and son Jim Veitch. He was also proceeded by his brother Bob Veitch and sister Joyce Lunceford.

Serving as Pallbearers are as follows: David Wilson, John McGiboney, Micheal Hedrick, Collin Scott, James Veitch Jr., Mike Chase, Gavin Hedrick, and David Veitch

The funeral will be held at John-Ridout’s Mortuary and Chapel on Monday, December 9. Visitation will be from 10 – 11 with the service beginning at 11:00 am, followed by a graveside service at Elmwood Cemetery.

Wayne’s favorite Bible verse – Even though I walk through the valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Psalms 23:4
