It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dennis Hudson, a cherished friend and esteemed colleague who retired from Fleet Operations in November 2022. Dennis was a valued member of our team, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

2025 Membership Renewals Due by March 28, 2025

Its that time of year where we need all members to update their membership information and pay their yearly dues. You will soon or should have already received your 2025 membership renewal form in the mail.  Please fill in that form and mail it with your payment to Dora Brandt at the address shown – or if you prefer, you may make your payment on-line by clicking the Payments link here or above in the menu.

If you pay on-line, we still need your membership information, so please Email a copy of your completed form to Dora Brandt at brandtd@bellsouth.net. You can either fill in the form by hand and mail it, scan and Email it, or edit the .pdf file using your Adobe .pdf editor, save it to your computer and attach it to an Email to Dora.

Note that there are several catagories of membership as discussed on the form and repeated below. Please pay the amount approriate for your level of membership. Most members should pay the regular member $20.00 rate (inside the Birmingham area):

2025 SCS/SNC Retirees Membership Qualifications & Dues:
(Note: Employees retiring after September 2024, the 2025 dues are NOT required.)

  1. Regular Members –
    • Employees retired with pension or long-term disability – Dues $20.00
    • Employees retired with pension or long-term disability living outside (more than 50-mile radius) of the Birmingham area. – Dues $10.00
  2. Associate Members:
    • Spouse of a dues paying Regular Member No dues required
    • Surviving spouse of a deceased Regular Member – Dues $10.00
  3. Honorary Members: Employees retired with a pension or long-term disability who are physically unable to participate. – No dues required

Funeral Arrangements for Wayne King (SNC Training) will be as follows:
Thursday, February 6th @ FBC Pelham – Visitation from 10am – 12pm with funeral service beginning at noon.
Friday, February 7th 10:15am Burial @ National Cemetery

Larry Sweeney

Larry Sweeney, age 77, of Birmingham, Alabama, went to be with his Heavenly Father on January 22, 2025. He was born in Brookhaven, Mississippi on April 15, 1947.

Larry graduated from Calhoun County High School. He received his degree in industrial technology from Mississippi State University, where he also began his military career in the Army ROTC. He retired from the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he worked as an IT engineer. He also worked for Southern Company Services and Sonat during his working career and was the owner of Data Projects, a computer services company.

Larry was a dreamer and an intellectual at heart. He had passions for music, reading, philosophical conversation, his Irish heritage, and all things Lord of The Rings. He loved nothing more than a good meal, good conversation, and good company. He was also a man of faith who had certainty in his mind and peace in soul about being called a child of God.

He is survived by his children, Nathan (Jaime) Sweeney, Kristin (Wolf) Gholson, Erica Sweeney, and Brian (Teyana) Sweeney; his six grandchildren, Killian, Asher and Teagan Gholson, Elliott Sweeney, and Caleb and Liam Sweeney; his brother, Gary Lynn Sweeney; his sister, Karen Sue Johnson; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Anderson Sweeney and Hilda Maxine Applewhite Sweeney; his sister, Freda Sweeney Freeman; his son, Andrew Elliott Sweeney; and his granddaughter, Roisin Louise Gholson.

Larry will be laid to rest at the Alabama National Cemetery, Montevallo.

Jan. 21, 2025 Meeting Cancelled Due to Weather

The January retiree meeting scheduled for 1:00 PM January 21, 2025 at the Colonnade Energy Center auditorium has been cancelled because of the inclement weather threat.  It is our hope Stan Connally, Executive Vice President of Operations at Southern Company can be rescheduled hopefully for our May meeting.
