Dewey O. Yeager (Sep 19, 1924 – Jan 27, 2016) went to be with the Lord January 27, 2016. Dewey died peacefully of natural causes at Brookwood Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. Dewey was born September 19, 1924 in West Blocton, Alabama to Olyis D. Yeager and Annie Mosley. He grew up in Marvel, Dogwood, and Pea Ridge communities outside of Montevallo. Dewey attended Montevallo High School. Dewey served during World War Two (WWII) in the U S Naval Construction Forces (NCF), Seabees, in the Pacific Theater of Operations (PTO). He served in construction projects in Saipan, Guam, and Pearl Harbor. He was awarded the WWII Victory Medal; the American Area Ribbon; and the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon. Continue reading

George Layman
Mar. 12, 1925 – Jan. 7, 2016 George O. Layman of Pensacola, FL passed away on January 7, 2016. A native of Mobile, AL, Mr. Layman was born on March 12, 1925. He attended Murphy High School and the University of Alabama. During World War II, Mr. Layman served in the 8th Air Force as a topographic engineer and participated in the advance planning for D-Day. He joined Southern Company as a construction engineer in 1949 and retired in 1992 from Gulf Power Company, Southern Company’s Florida subsidiary, as Assistant to the Vice President for Power Generation and Transmission. During his tenure with Gulf Power Company, Mr. Layman held key leadership positions in Power Generation and Environmental Affairs. He was instrumental in the construction of three Florida power plants and supervised the entire construction project of Gulf Power’s corporate headquarters in Pensacola. Mr. Layman established Gulf Power’s Environmental Affairs Department and worked with other Florida utility representatives to form the Florida Electric Power Coordinating Group, Inc., an umbrella organization dealing with environmental issues affecting the electric utility industry. Gene Watkins

Marvin Eugene (Gene) Watkins Jr., 3-30-1943 – 12-18-2015, age 72, of Pelham, AL passed away on December the 18th. Gene was born in Chattanooga and raised in Highland Park. He graduated from Chattanooga Central High School in 1961. He graduated from Chattanooga State Community College in 1970 with an associate degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked at TVA in Chattanooga and in Knoxville, BE&K in Birmingham, and retired from Southern Company. He was a member of Christ Church United Methodist. Gene was a member of East Lake Masonic Lodge F.A.M. #698. He was also a Knights Templar. He is survived by his wife of 52 years Sandra N. Watkins, daughter Kay Jeter, son Mark (Heather) Watkins, and grandchildren Justin Covell, Tyler Covell, Payne Watkins and Riley Watkins. Services was officiated by The Reverend Michael Miller of Lakeview Pelham’s First United Methodist Church at Southern Heritage Funeral Home Monday December 21 at 2:00 pm with visitation starting one hour prior. Burial was at Lakeside Memorial Gardens in Chattanooga, TN at 1:00 pm EST on December 22.

Jesse Lee Martin
Jesse Lee Martin, Oct. 20, 1939 – Dec. 31, 2015, of Birmingham, Alabama went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, December 31, 2015. Jesse was born, October 20, 1939, in Nauvoo, Alabama to his parents, Willie and Rosa Martin, who preceded him in death. His sister, Nella Mae Adams, also precedes him in death. Mr. Martin is survived by his brother Cecil Martin (Mary) and his sister Edna Faye Edwards. Jesse, an Auburn University graduate, retired from Southern Company Services as a Manager and Engineer after more than 30 years of service. He was a faithful member of Shades Mountain Baptist Church where he served as an ordained deacon, consistently taught God’s Word as a Sunday School teacher, and strongly supported the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ around the world. Following a private burial in New Oak Grove Cemetery, Nauvoo, a Celebration of Jesse’s life was held Monday, January 4, at 4:00, at Shades Mountain Baptist Church, Vestavia Hills, AL.
