Clarence Albert Brasher

Sept 15, 1924 – Sept 25, 2014

Clarence, “Al”, was a resident of Homewood, AL and passed away peacefully at the age of 90. After a career in the NASA manned space flight program in Huntsville, AL, he retired from Southern Company Services in Birmingham, AL. Al was preceded in death by his first wife of 52 years, Thelma Ruth Sullivan Brasher, and his second wife of 10 years, Pauline Thompson Brasher; one child, David Wayne Brasher. Al is survived by his children, James Brasher, Cliff Brasher (Renee), LaWanda Broadus, Mary Ann Parris and John Brasher; daughter-in-law, Susan Brasher; 11 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren; many other family members and a host of friends. The family extends special thanks to the staff of Lakeside Hospice for their loving care and support of Al. A visitation will be held at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel on Monday, Sept 29th, 2014 from 12:00pm until 1:00pm with a funeral service to follow at 1:15pm in Oakwood Memorial Gardens, Mausoleum Chapel, in Gardendale, AL. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made in his honor to the Lakeside Hospice, P.O. Box 544, Pell City, AL, 35128.

Flu Shots for SNC Retirees

Protect yourself and get a flu shot

Southern Nuclear Wellness will offer free on-site flu shots for all benefits-eligible employees, retirees and dependents (over age 4) who are covered by the company’s medical plan.

Flu shot clinics at Inverness will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 24,12-6 p.m. in building 40 and on Thursday, Oct. 23, 7-11 a.m. in building 42.

Dependents of employees not on the company’s medical plan and contract employees may purchase a shot for $26. Payment must be by check (no cash, credit or debit cards) to TotalWellness at the time of service.

You will need to provide your Southern Company ID number or the last four digits of your Social Security number. Parental or guardian consent is required for dependents under the age of 18 in Georgia and age 19 in Alabama. Flu shots will not be given to people with allergies to eggs or to anyone who has previously had a severe reaction to a flu shot.

For those who are unable to visit an on-site clinic, the company has partnered with CVS/Caremark to make flu shots available with no co-pay for employees, retirees and eligible dependents covered under the company’s medical plan starting Sept. 1. Participants will be able to choose from more than 52,000 pharmacies in the CVS/ Caremark network. The network is not limited to CVS locations and includes most major chains including Wal-Mart. Employees and retirees will need to present their Caremark prescription card and a valid photo ID, and are urged to call the pharmacy in advance to check availability and make an appointment (if needed).

Flu shot vouchers will be available beginning Oct. 20 for employees not covered by the company’s medical plan or are unable to visit an on-site clinic.

We continue to look for ways to develop our employees while building bench strength and enhancing operational excellence.  Therefore, we are pleased to announce the following employee movement and organizational changes in Engineering and Construction Services (E&CS) effective September 13, 2014.

Steve Woodfield-Retiring

Steve Woodfield, General Manager of Design Engineering, has announced his intention to retire during the first quarter of 2015.  During the next few months prior to his retirement, Steve will take on responsibilities associated with planning organizational enhancements to continue our efforts around project delivery improvements in a changing workload environment.  Steve has over 41 years of experience in the Generation organization serving in leadership roles in plant startup, project management, plant O&M, technical services, and design.  Steve will report to Paula and the E&CS management team for these efforts.

Harvey Ivey- General Manager of Design Engineering

Harvey Ivey has been selected to replace Steve as the General Manager of Design Engineering.   For the past five years, Harvey has served as the Manager of I&C Systems and Field Support in E&CS Technical Services.  Continue reading

Farley media tour
SNC Communications provided an exclusive tour of Plant Farley today to Bill Riales of WKRG in Mobile and Jennifer Calhoun of the Dothan Eagle. The group received a presentation on plant operations by Cheryl Gayheart and J.J. Hutto, and an overview of Vogtle 3 and 4 construction by Mike McCracken. They also received a walking and perimeter tour of the plant.

Vogtle Unit 1 status
SNC Communications was contacted today by Christine Buurma of Bloomberg, Kevin Jose of Reuters, Bill Freebairn of Platts and David Givens of Argus asking about the status of Plant Vogtle Unit 1. Communications responded with the following:

On Friday, Aug. 29, operators at Plant Vogtle reduced the power of Unit 1 to perform maintenance on the cooling water system of the main generator. Work is complete and operators are safely returning the unit to full power.
